Picture
The East Haven Rotary Club, which is now in its 80th year, has announced this year's recipients of their annual Joseph Buonome Memorial Public Safety Awards. This year the club will be recognizing East Haven Firefighter BC Eileen Parlato and the East Haven Operators and Support Staff of the South Central Regional SWAT Team (Sgt. Craig Michalowski, Sgt. Anthony Rybaruk, Sgt. Joseph Mulhern, Det. Jeffrey Vailette, Det. Joseph Finoia and Officers Luke Rasile and Joseph Carangelo). As is customary, the awards will be presented at the Rotary's annual Installation of Officers Dinner, which this year will be held on Thursday June 28th . The event will take place at Anthony's Ocean View, 450 Lighthouse Road in New Haven.
Following a 6:00 pm social hour including appetizers, a buffet dinner will be presented at 7:00 pm, with tickets available for $ 50 per person. Battalion Chief Eileen Parlato is a 26-year career veteran of the East Haven Fire Department. Prior to that she served as a Volunteer firefighter with Co # 1. Eileen is a licensed Paramedic and EMS and Fire Service Instructor. She was the first women to be hired as a career firefighter with the Town and volunteers her time in many organizations. Eileen has been active with the Firetruck Christmas tree program, coordinating this popular holiday giving program for many years. She also previously organized the T. William Webster Golf Tournament, along with other various fundraising bowling events. The SCR-SWAT team is comprised of Officers from the Towns of North Haven, East Haven, Branford, North Branford, Madison and Guilford. Recently in a highly publicized event, the team responded to an incident of domestic violence in North Haven that resulted in a massive explosion which caused significant injuries to nine members of the team, including five personnel from the East Haven Police Department. Current President Rich Anania will be turning over the gavel to Bill Richardson. Also being installed are the following officers: Sal Maltese as President-elect; Co-Secretary's Cheryl Panzo and Dona DeLeone; Co- Treasurers Carl Ruggiero and Joan Adamczyk; and Sergeant at Arms, Ralph Mannochi.
In addition, the club will be recognizing the winners of two scholarships to high school students and honoring them at this year's dinner event. Each year the club provides a $1000 scholarship in the name of former member Vincent Balletto, MD, to a graduating East Haven High School student entering the field of medicine. The winner of this year's "Dr. Balletto Scholarship Award" is Marissa DeLoughery.
The club also awards another $ 1000 scholarship given to one of last year's Rotary "Students of the Month". This scholarship was recently renamed by the Club as the "John "Jack" Leary Memorial Scholarship", after long time Rotarian Jack Leary, who passed away during the past year. Leary was instrumental in the creation of this event and the award will be presented by his wife, Lisa Leary, who is a former Town Clerk for East Haven. The winner of the award is Frank Camera.
